I have enjoyed H.P. Lovecrafts style of horror for sometime. Leaving the reader with a since of nihilism. This idea that we are so insignificant and that the things happening in the universe are so unknowable that upon knowing them you loose your mind. A.W. Tozer frames God in this type of otherness except in contrast to Lovecraft's leaves the reader with the impression that even though God to the fullest extent is so unknowable he has condescended to us because he wills it. Tozer takes us through a collection of attributes of God that are pretty straight forward. In each he unpacks as much as has been reveled in scripture and then plainly points to what we as humans either fully acknowledge or deny entirely. There is so much more to God we can feel it in our inner beings. We can perceive his infinitude but we can not fully grasp it. This is for every aspect of God. Then the most wonderful conclusion comes about. To respond to this we must respond to God with awe, wonder, and utter devotion. In the same way nihilism drives man to madness because why is there even a universe. In the knowledge of the Holy we are called in to a sweet madness one that shapes us for the better, draws us into a relationship with the Almighty and engenders good will towards our fellow man. I gave it four stars only because some of the logic he follows coupled with the large vocabulary he uses had me reading a couple of paragraphs a few times to make sure I had followed correctly.
